Preventing and Treating Heat Stroke in Pets

Heatstroke is a serious threat for both humans and animals here in central Florida. When the temperature climbs into the 90s and beyond, it’s important to know how to prevent heatstroke, how to identify the signs, and how to treat the condition.

They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and that is definitely true when talking about heatstroke. Taking steps to prevent your pet from overheating is the best way to keep them safe. Our top tips for heatstroke prevention include:

  • Never leave your pet outside on an extremely hot day
  • Always be sure your pet has plenty of clean water
  • Don’t walk or jog with your pet in the heat of the day
  • Never leave your pet in an enclosed space, like a car, on a hot day

If you suspect your pet is experiencing a heat stroke, look for the following signs and symptoms:

  • Excessive panting
  • Excessive drooling
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea, with or without blood
  • Weakness
  • Incoordination or stumbling
  • Sudden collapse
  • Seizures

If you notice any of these, seek veterinary care immediately. If you’re in the Wesley Chapel area, contact (813) 279-6500 to speak with a team member here at Pet Urgent Care.

Time is of the essence when treating the signs and symptoms of heatstroke. The faster treatment begins the better chance there is for a full recovery. When you first notice signs of a heat stroke, immediately remove the animal from the high temperatures and bring him/her inside. Provide plenty of fresh, cool drinking water. Cover your pet in lukewarm wet towels and rub the bottom of their paws with rubbing alcohol. Bring your pet’s temperature down as slowly and gradually as possible to prevent further medical complications. If your pet shows no signs of improvement after 10 minutes, get them to an urgent care facility or pet hospital as quickly as possible.
